Sexual Health Clinics (GUM Clinic - Genito-Urinary Medicine)
Sexual Health Clinics are sometimes known as GUM clinics (Genito-Urinary Medicine). These are usually located at your local hospital and are one of the most effective ways to find out about your sexual health. You can get specialist advice and treatment at a Sexual health clinic for all sexually transmitted infections. This is a free and confidential service and you don’t even have to give your real name if you don’t want to (it is important to remember which name you do give for when you need to return!).
Many Sexual health clinics offer an appointment service and drop in clinics. Also available are young peoples' clinics.
Family planning clinics also provide confidential information and advice on contraception, pregnancy options, pregnancy testing, cervical smears, free condoms and emergency contraception. They can also offer advice and counselling on a range of sexual health issues.
CONFIDENTIALITY applies to all sexual health services, even if you are under 16. This means that no information about you or your visit will be disclosed to anyone without your consent – this includes GPs, your parents, partners and friends.
All medicines are free of charge.
