Six Helpful Tips for Parents and Carers
Keep an open mind - the world has changed since you were a teenager.
Review your relationship - are you still the person who tells them what to do? To ensure they make informed choices and decisions, you need to be the ‘enabler’. Your role is to help them make the right choices from now on.
Be firm but fair - you will from time to time have to insist on certain things particularly If they are related to the health and safety of your child. But it’s also the time to let go to allow self expression and self development.
Deal with moods - because they don’t always have the skills and experience to deal with everyday situations they may develop mood swings and the only people they can vent this confusion on is the ones they love and feel safe with - you. Your role is not to react negatively, but to encourage them to talk about their feelings and emotions.
Keeping yourself informed - talking to young people about sex and relationships can be a daunting prospect for a lot of parents. However, you can prepare yourself beforehand and this will help you feel more confident. With the internet you can access all the information you need but with so many sites where do you begin?
